Exigence is a rhetorical element of writing. For this lesson, exigence is the thing or experience that prompted us to choose a topic to write about.
Exigence can affect the author’s purpose of writing. For example, if the writer sees that earthquakes frequently cause houses to collapse, so that many people die in the disaster, the writer will write an engineering article about house reinforcement and renovation; or write about some ways to protect themselves in case of disasters. exigence also helps the writer to understand more easily who is the audience of his or her article, because what you want to express is closely related to them.
For my assignment this semester, here is a reflection on exigence in the lab report.
“The exigence of this assignment is that people live in noisy environments for long periods of time, causing many to suffer hearing damage without even knowing it.”
